Kapitel was recognised with 2017 Culture Friend of the Year award

Kapitel was recognized by the Estonian minister of culture as 2017 Culture Friend – one of the companies that contributed to the good of the cultural sphere last year. Starting in 2017, Kapitel is a supporter of “The Unfinished City” urban studies project at the Estonian Academy of Arts (EKA) Faculty of Architecture. The project analyses urban design visions and future architectural scenarios for Tallinn.

“We have been successful in business and that allows us to give back to society. For years, we have supported culture, active lifestyles and sport and we have also given to charity,” said member of the Kapitel management board and development director Indrek Moorats. “As a real estate company, our goal is to create functional and human-centred business environments that fit in with the urban space. Through research done in collaboration with EKA, we are doing our part to find the best practices, knowledge and recommendations for planning the future of city neighbourhoods, which we and other planners and developers can draw on.”

The three-year-long “The Unfinished City” project launched in 2017 will run six semesters and involves the EKA’s own teaching staff, researchers, doctoral students and outside specialists. The city of Tallinn is also a partner in cooperation. The research focuses on six major topics: planning practices, structure of the urban fabric, density of the city, city borders, large-scale infrastructure in the city and the city’s personality. Each one of these is tackled over half a year by a research group of about five members. An international workshop will be held for each topic, and work will take place in parallel with the students from the architecture and urban design and urban studies fields. The six semester-long research segments will be preceded by analysis of examples from elsewhere in the world and an international conference exploring the topic. It will be followed by an exhibition and book, which will tie the entire research together into a uniform treatment.
